Why
March 3, 2024
Our two and half year old grandson came to stay with us, grandma and grandpa, while his little sister was being born. These were precious and very busy days we got to share with him, all to ourselves. To say that our grandson is inquisitive is a vast understatement. Everything we said was followed by a “Why”.
Now, this isn’t my first rodeo, so I knew the game well. After all I have played it many times with my children while they were growing up. I was up for the challenge. Every time he would ask me why, which was ALL the time, I would answer with what I thought was a pretty good response. But alas, he would ask why to that question. Anyone who has played this game knows that this can go on until one of you tires of responding or asking. Well, I am no quitter.
But as the days rolled on and baby sister was not quite ready to face the world, or possibly all the why questions, I was sensing that I just may be the first to loose the why game. Not willing to be beat by a two year old I continued to play our little circle talk game.
My grandson hadn’t had a nap in four days, obviously it was more fun to play with grandpa and grandma, but I knew he was exhausted. “Let’s go take a nap,” I ventured.
“I dont want to take a nap,” he replied.
So I pulled out the “mom said” card. “Mom said that your body needs to rest so you can get up and have lots of energy to play.”
“Why?”
“Because your body needs to recharge. Just like when we plug our phones in when the battery gets low.”
“But why?”
And this went on for quite some time. Me thinking of reasons why and him asking why. Until I finally said, “Beccause God made us that way.”
Silence. And then he looked at me and said “Oh, oh-Tay.
